The Shell Pernis Refinery is the biggest in Europe processing 20 Million Tonnes per annum of crude oil per year. Located on the Rotterdam Energy Corridor, the Pernis site covers 550 Hectares, with a total employed workforce at the site of 2100 men and women. The Pernis site has been in production for more than 100 years, with the basis of the current facility coming in to production in the late 1940’s with the plant continually being updated to meet customer requirements and to drive operational efficiency.

In 2015, Kentech became the multi-disciplinary (Piping & Mechanical, Civil and Electrical & Instrumentation) service provider at Pernis and the Europoort tank farm, initially for three years and following significant managed improvements in overall efficiency the contract was subsequently extended for a further two years. To drive the efficiency within the contract Kentech utilised the principles of Agile and Lean methodologies, to ensure continuous improvement in day to day work execution activities. The Agile and Lean methodologies are integrated with our digital technologies within our K2 Base Camp room, driving performance daily, weekly and monthly.

Kentech provides the site facilities, management team, supervision, labour, tools, construction equipment, vehicles, spare parts and materials required to carry out the Services. Kentech undertake a range of maintenance activities on unit rates including preventive, corrective and campaign maintenance across the Pernis Site on a multi-disciplinary basis. Kentech also provide multi-disciplinary emergency support to the site combined with specialist activities including: heat exchanger bundle overhauls, rotating machinery maintenance, tank maintenance repairs, foundations for brownfield modifications and carbon & stainless steel piping pre-fabrication project works. As an integrated maintenance contractor Kentech ensures maintenance tasks are managed end to end with minimum interface requirements from Shell and can drive efficiency in the activities being undertaken by multi-skilling the staff. The quality of the work undertaken at site is managed through continuous monitoring and development of staff competences and this links to the excellent safety performance achieved.

Kentech also manage and undertake multi-disciplinary modification project works across Pernis and Europoort, utilizing the deep expertise of the assets within the workforce and a small projects team approach. The multi-disciplinary approach ensures the client only has to deal with a single interface minimizing their project and interface management costs. The projects are also managed within the K2 Basecamp.

Shell and Kentech continue to work in partnership to improve safety and efficiency to drive top quartile performance, for the Pernis refinery.
